What the standard covers

IEC 62353 sets out recurrent and after-repair electrical safety tests for medical electrical equipment in use.

When to test

Before first use, after every repair and at the interval set by the manufacturer or your risk assessment.

What a good record shows

Device, serial, test equipment, measured values, limits and a pass or fail signed by a competent person.

Who can perform the tests

Testing should be done by a competent person using calibrated test equipment. Most hospitals use in-house clinical engineers, a service partner or both.

Common failures

Damaged power cords, failed protective earth and excessive leakage current are the most frequent findings. Most are caught by a careful visual inspection before any measurement.

Keeping records useful

Store test records against the device serial in your asset management system, not in paper binders, so they can be found during an audit or recall.
